The Catalysts Initiative
The traditional partnership between the federal government and scientific research is shifting. While Texas Biomed has significantly expanded contract research with industry, military and foundations over the past decade, severe cutbacks to federal grants are slowing the pace of discovery and innovation. Texas Biomed launched The Catalysts Initiative, with the goal of raising $10 million, to help fill the gaps and keep research moving forward. With your support, we’ve raised $8 million to date. DONOR SPOTLIGHT: MARGIE AND BILL KLESSE
Long-time supporters Margie and Bill Klesse are well-known for their passion for supporting educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“We feel strongly that a STEM education can give people a better life,” said Bill Klesse, who has served on the Texas Biomed Board of Trustees since 2009, joining when he was Chairman and CEO of Valero Energy Corporation.
But once students graduate with their STEM degree, they need a job. That’s where Texas Biomed comes in, strengthening the scientific community in San Antonio with top-tier research capabilities.
“Texas Biomed is a huge asset for San Antonio,” Klesse said. “The Institute is playing a key role in putting terrible infectious diseases like Ebola, tuberculosis and COVID on the back burner.”
The Klesses ultimately want to help enable people to make a difference – those doing the work and the millions more that will benefit. “Margie and I are proud to support Texas Biomed and the researchers working to find cures, which will help people all around the world live more fulfilled lives,” Klesse said. “What better cause is there?”
