Under the microscope
A granuloma is a dense collection of immune cells that surround Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the lung. These structures make it harder for treatments like antibiotics to attack the bacteria and cause lasting scar tissue. Researchers at Texas Biomed are working to develop better treatments and vaccines to help prevent more than 10 million new TB infections and more than 1 million deaths each year.
